What do people love about living in Carp? It’s a safe, peaceful area where you can find all the tranquillity you’ll ever want. This up-and-coming community is 33 km from downtown Ottawa. However, you won’t have to go very far when you want to get out for some fun and excitement. Many residential areas are within walking distance of the downtown core, where you’ll find shops, restaurants, and privately owned cafes. Now that the sweltering hot days of summer are coming to an end, Carp is about to become a hub of Fall festivities. Here are just a few events that prove this quiet little town is anything but boring.
Makatew Workshops
Makatew Workshops hosts groups from 10 to 1000 people and provides a glimpse into Indigenous life. You’re about to discover everything you ever wanted to know about medicine bags, Native hand drums, rattles, smudging, talking sticks, and dream catchers.
You can even book Indigenous dancers and Knowledge Keepers to present whenever you’re hosting an event of your own. While you’re there, feel free to browse the stunning selection of leather work, jewellery, and warm, luxurious blankets just in time for the cold weather! For now, all workshops are virtual due to Covid-19.
Carp Fall Fair
When you see how many people flocked to the Carp Fall Fair, you’d never guess that we had a reputation for being a sleepy town. This fair is such an exciting event that it’s now known as the “Best Little Fair in Canada.” Here is just a taste of what’s in store:
- Live music
- World-class horse shows
- President’s Choice SuperDogs
- A magic show
- A petting zoo
And of course, don’t forget the Midway. The exhilarating rides will have you spinning, twirling, twisting, tumbling, and begging for more!
The thrill begins on September 22nd and goes through September 25th.
Capital Equestrian Finals
Calling all horse lovers! The first-ever Capital Equestrian Finals show is hosted by Partridge Acres this year. Come and meet these magnificent creatures and watch as they complete their impressive leaps and jumps. The show takes place at the Carp Fairgrounds from September 9th to September 11th.
KIN Vineyard
What’s Fall in the heart of Ottawa Valley without a little wine tasting? KIN Vineyards is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for wine tastings. You can show up anytime. Or, for an extra special experience, call ahead to arrange an event for your group. Wine tasting is an enjoyable occasion at any time.
However, pair your wine with a tasty dish for even more satisfaction. Anything goes when it comes to pairings. But the expert chefs at our partner restaurant, Joe’s Italian Kitchen, will create a match that can only be described as magical.
True wine connoisseurs can even join the KINfolk Club, giving you premium access to events and limited-release wines.
Farmer’s Markets
In Carp, we are all about the farmers’ markets, especially in the Fall. There is just something in the air as you shop directly with local vendors for your fresh produce, cheese and dairy, and baked goods. And the Carp Farmers’ Market really gives us something to brag about!
The Harvest Celebration Market is around the corner, and you have to experience it this year. Come check out the pumpkins, gourds, corn, and other Fall treats. With over 100 vendors, you’re sure to go home with plenty of delicious treats.
This year, kids can win a special prize by participating in the scavenger hunt. The event is on October 1st from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carp Fairgrounds.
Autumn Hiking in Carp
Hiking is the quintessential Fall activity. What better way to admire the dazzling beauty of Autumn leaves than strolling through the woods? Any trail can be beautiful, but the paths and meadows of Carp Hills are simply transcendent.
To keep the trails beautiful for the next generation, the Friends of the Carp Hills asks everyone to follow a few ground rules:
- For your safety, learn about the trails and paths beforehand.
- Use only authorized trails for walking and cycling, and don’t trespass on private property.
- Please be respectful and clean up after yourself. Leave only footprints and take only memories (and maybe a photo or two.)
Here are three trails maintained by the Friends of the Carp Hills:
- Crazy Horse Trail: a 6.2 km pedestrian-only trail named after an old bar that used to stand across from the trailhead. This rugged terrain is ideal for advanced hikers but not recommended for beginners, young children, or those with mobility issues. High-quality hiking shoes are highly recommended!
- Carp Barons Trail: A moderately challenging 3 km loop open to hikers and cyclists. It takes an average of 40 minutes to an hour to complete. Keep an eye out for birds, turtles, and other wildlife!
- Hidden Path Lake: A 650-metre gravel pathway that takes you through Hidden Park Lake. It’s generally considered to be an easy route, and most people can complete it within 30 minutes. Dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash. This short path provides a beautiful view of the lake and stunning Fall colours!
